Building The Alaskan Highway - Mega Structure. The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 2,700 kilometres (1,700 mi), as of 2012 it is 2,232 km (1,387 mi) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is ...
The city of Whittier is in the early stages of figuring out how decrepit the crumbling Buckner Building might be, with the hopes of maybe -- and that's a big maybe -- bringing the once-great structure back from the dead. Watch on ADN.com http://j.mp/adnbucknerbld

www.DickProenneke.com - "Alone in the Wilderness" is the story of Dick Proenneke living in the Alaska wilderness. Dick filmed his adventures so he could show his relatives in the lower 48 states what life was like in Alaska, building his cabin, hunting for food and exploring the area. Bob Swerer has taken the best footage from Dick's films and he has created 3 videos about Dick, "Alone in the Wilderness", "Alaska, Silence and Solitude" and "The Frozen North". You can purchase all of them in DVD or VHS format from the www.DickProenneke.com website.
http://www.curvcosteelbuildings.com/prefab-steel-homes.php Mr. Olen Northern in Palmer, Alaska in Matanuska-Susitna borough wanted a maintenance free durable prefab house that he could erect himself that would withstand the heavy snow and wind conditions of Alaska. These requirements led him to purchase an arch metal building from Curvco Steel Buildings. Mr. Northern built the shell at his residential steel building house in only 3 days!! There has been as much as 3-4 feet of snow in a day and he especially likes the fact that he has not had to shovel it off. His Quonset house is extremely energy efficient and offers a clear wide open interior as it does not require any interior posts or beams. Mr. Northern has been extremely satisfied with his prefab house kit and enjoys the beautiful ...

There's a creepy abandoned building in Whittier, Alaska that use to be a U.S. military all-in-one facility back in the 1950's. It's formally known as The Buckner Building or "The City Under One Roof". While it's against the law to step foot in the building, my friend Nate and I took my HELLA-copter up to check it out instead. The wind gusts were up to 50 mph this day, so getting the footage we got was no easy task. For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Klondike Alaska charts the history of many of those railroads. ©KUAC 2005 DVD's of this program are available for purchase at www.kuac.org.

This classic short film shows how to make an igloo using only snow and a knife. Two Inuit men in Canada’s Far North choose the site, cut and place snow blocks and create an entrance--a shelter completed in one-and-a-half hours. The commentary explains that the interior warmth and the wind outside cement the snow blocks firmly together. As the short winter day darkens, the two builders move their caribou sleeping robes and extra skins indoors, confident of spending a snug night in the midst of the Arctic cold!
Beau Gibb and Cambria Houtte shared similar dreams of building a home in Alaska, but they wanted to do it using energy efficient principles. The duo embarked on a three-year journey designing and constructing their passive solar home in Palmer, Alaska. During that time, they made new discoveries about how to effectively construct a true passive solar home in the unique landscapes of the Matanuska Valley. This video presents a visualization of shaking that was recorded in the Frontier Building in Anchorage, Alaska, during the Mw7.1 earthquake, January 24, 2016, Iniskin, Alaska. It exhibits how a tall building behaves and performs during strong earthquake shaking. Note that relative to the height of the building, the motions are magnified by a factor of 300 to show deformation characteristics. This video also shows how structural monitoring projects by the USGS National Strong Motion Project can benefit the engineering and research community by capturing real-life shaking in buildings such as the Frontier Building in seismic areas. Travel video about destination Denali National Park in Alaska. Denali National Park is located about six hundred and thirty miles from the southern coast of Alaska and is nine thousand six hundred square miles of original Sub-Arctic wilderness. The history of the region began millions of years ago when mighty tectonic plates collided. The force of the collision folded the granite and sedimentary rock together at a huge elevation which subsequently formed the highest mountain in North America, Mount Mckinley. The coniferous forests consist primarily of birch and fir and deciduous trees and shrubs cover the stone-based valleys. An amazing variety of bushes, herbs and flowers turn the landscape into an array of bright colour. On the thin humus above the permafrost soil there’s vegetation ...
